First of all, I want to thank y’all for all the helpful and encouraging comments when I told you that I wasn’t excited about having to buy a car.
A few of you recommended getting a hybrid or a plug-in hybrid, and I really did think about that.
For the record, no, I cannot afford a Tesla. Not in my wildest dreams.
But I thought long and hard about getting a Prius or a Volt or something similar. I played devil’s advocate with myself so frequently that I actually started picturing little good and evil miniature versions of myself perched on each of my shoulders.
Not really. That would be crazy.
And here’s the thing. I am all for conserving gas, electricity, the environment, and cute cat videos. But what I don’t want to be life-or-death, beat-someone-with-a-baseball-bat dependant on is a car.
Because if I don’t have a car, I couldn’t care less about the availability of gas. And I could totally survive (I totally have survived) several days without electricity. And until very recently, I could always just walk to the grocery store if I needed food.
So I got the car I wanted. An all-wheel-drive compact SUV that will let me cart lots of stuff around when I need to and give me the control I need to head up to Lake Tahoe for some Winter skiing and Summer trail runs. (I will be running trails again next summer!)
And there are days when I don’t drive my car at all. I don’t need to. And I feel very fortunate about that.
So yes, I bought a 2013 Honda CR-V AWD, which gets about 25 MPG (although I’m getting 29 right now). I didn’t enjoy buying it, but I do like my new car. It’s pretty cool, and it gets me around.
But that’s it:
This is my car.
There are many like it, but this one is mine.
it is nothing.
I am fine.
What kind of car do you drive? What’s your dream car?
